Good news on our efforts to protect the environment, legislation I voted for in the Assembly to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to reduce how much electricity our homes and businesses require, has been signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul.
The Advanced Building Codes, Appliance, and Equipment Efficiency Standards Act of 2022 could reduce ongoing energy bills, leading to about $4 billion in energy savings for building owners by 2030.
It also will expand appliance standards and deliver $15 billion in savings to New Yorkers through 2035, by reducing wasted energy from the use of less efficient everyday products and appliances. I am pleased New York State has reinforced its commitment to green energy that’s both effective and affordable for consumers.
I also voted in favor of two other important environmental proposals, which did not pass this session, but which I will continue to advocate for. The All Electric Buildings Legislation would require new buildings have all electric appliances and heating and cooling systems. I was also in favor of the Build Public Renewables Act to authorize the New York State Power Authority to build out utility-scale renewable energy generation and transmission infrastructure and requiring it to supply only renewable power.
New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh.
