Westchester Insider: New York League of Conservation Voters: Environmental News for December 20th.

Here’s what we’re reading this week:

New NYS Law: Establishments Must Donate or Organically Recycle Surplus Food

Each year, approximately 40% of food produced in the United States is left uneaten, equating to an annual loss of $218 billion, while approximately 2.2 million New Yorkers are food insecure. Across New York State, restaurants alone are estimated to waste around 25.4 billion pounds of food waste, and grocery stores generate around 21 billion pounds. Food waste is also detrimental to the environment, emitting methane and other greenhouse gases when sent to landfills, making up a total of 6-8% of human-caused emissions worldwide.

Introducing Our Interactive School Bus Depot Map, a New Tool for Electric School Bus Advocacy

NYLCV has been working on an interactive map that shows the location of school bus depots across NYC and gives a visual representation of the disproportionate number of school bus depots located in environmental justice areas, areas with high asthma rates, and areas with poor air quality. We took an original map created by the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) and layered on relevant data showcasing air quality and potential environmental justice (EJ) areas across the city. We used the United Hospital Fund Boundaries to outline different neighborhoods across the City.

The mayor-elect will have to deal with the climate threat from day one, and some experts are hoping for a more forceful approach. “He needs to put a real priority on acting on climate and not just talking about it. And that needs to come from City Hall,” Julie Tighe, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters, said.

Adams listed several priorities before winning the Democratic primary in June, including making the city a hub for wind power, pushing for more solar energy and increasing resiliency efforts, especially in boroughs other than Manhattan.

As part of the infrastructure deal, Congress just committed billions to replacing lead lines. New York is expected to get nearly $500 million next year alone. Much of New York’s congressional delegation led by Rep. Grace Meng has sent this letter to the state imploring the Hochul administration Department of Health to get the lead out and map the problem.

“The real concern is: is the state prepared to quickly and wisely do the work that needs to be done, and you can’t manage what you can’t measure,” said Josh Klainberg with the New York League of Conservation Voters.

Adding more e-bikes, and having them ready-to-go fully charged, is a matter of equity and accessibility, according to the New York League of Conservation Voters. “E-bikes can really make the difference, in particular thinking about longer rides over bridges. We are supportive of pushing for more Citi Bike electrification, and as we move across expanding to more communities,” said Julie Tighe, president of New York League of Conservation Voters.
