Westchester Insider: Westchester County Legislator Ruth Walter 15th District: A Veterans Day Message.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11th. Veterans Day evolved from Armistice Day, which was proclaimed in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson. Armistice Day recognized the end of World War I when hostilities ceased on November 11th at 11 A.M, 1918 (the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month). Congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize Veterans of all U.S. wars, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower made November 11th the official national observance of Veterans Day. There is a Veterans Day Moment of Silence which calls on all Americans to observe two minutes of silence on Veterans Day, beginning at 3:11 pm (E.S.T.), in honor of the service and sacrifice of Veterans throughout the history of the nation.

The theme for Veterans Day 2021 is “Honoring All Who Served.” All Veterans make a sacrifice to serve their country, whether physically, emotionally, or by being away from their loved ones and missing important life moments. And sadly, many Veterans not only endure terrible hardship and suffering in the line of duty, but also trauma, economic instability, and physical disabilities in the aftermath.

As a way of giving back to our Veterans, the Board of Legislators voted unanimously this year to increase the property tax exemptions for Veterans to the maximum level allowable under New York State law, raising the caps by nearly 39%.

And so let’s take two minutes now -- 3:11 pm or whenever you can -- to reflect on their service and to thank them for their many sacrifices on our behalf, for preserving our freedoms, and for protecting the way of life we love.

Please forward this E-News to family and friends who may be interested in this information.

Sincerely,

Ruth Walter
