Greenburgh Insider: baseball great Joe Torre pays tribute to Elmsford Little League.

Joe Torre spent some time at the closing event for the 2021 Elmsford Little League season inspiring future Major League baseball champs.

This past Saturday Joe Torre, Major League Baseballs' chief baseball officer from 2011 to 2020, inspired hundreds of Little League athletes when he attended the closing ceremonies for the 2021 Elmsford Little League season.  Torre is the only major leaguer to achieve both 2,000 hits as a player and 2,000 wins as a manager. He played with the Braves, Cardinals and Mets.

I've been attending Elmsford Little League ceremonies for years.  Joe Torre is not the first  major league baseball player to show up at Elmsford Little League events.  Darry Strawberry, Dwight Gooden,  Tony Lasorda and Mariano Rivera are just a few of the other greats that I recall paying tribute to a great Little League organization.

This League is more than a league - its community at its best. There are over 700 players enrolled in the program. Although the name of the organization is Elmsford Little League - Little League members come from all over the town.  The volunteers have upgraded their facility each year. Many coaches, board members invest their time helping our youth. The team this year installed a new scoreboard on Arciola Field in memory of former Councilman Kevin Morgan who devoted many years to the League. They constructed a new scorer's announcing booth on Arciola Field. Both fields have been resurfaced and conditioned in order to be ready for hundreds of games each season. And, a new inaugural season of tee ball was started.  Five years ago a girls softball program was inaugurated.

A salute to the officers who give of their time. Rob Gramaglia, John Malone, Chris Epple, Louis Herena, Brian Cunningham, Troy Smith, Daniel Scovotti, Kristen Kumar, Rob Friedman, John Maroney, Alan Ratner, Dan Fenster, Doug Tricarico, Rishi Sawhney, Jordan Brenner, Glen Weiner and Joe Breese are current board members. Former Board members who laid the foundation for a great program also deserve our thanks.  The Elmsford Little League plays at Rumbrook Park on Saw Mill River Road, a town park.

Thank you, Elmsford Little League players and volunteers for doing a great job.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor
