New York State Insider: New York State Attorney General James Takes 147 Guns Off the Streets at Rockland County Gun Buyback.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 30, 2021

AG James Has Taken Nearly 1,300 Firearms Out of Communities Since 2019.

NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced that 147 firearms were turned in to law enforcement at a gun buyback event hosted by her office, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh, and the Clarkstown Police Department. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) accepts — with no questions asked — working and non-working, unloaded firearms in exchange for compensation on site. To date, Attorney General James has taken nearly 1,300 firearms out of communities through gun buybacks since taking office in 2019.

“Gun violence is an ongoing threat to public safety and it jeopardizes the welfare of our families and children,” said Attorney General James. “Getting these dangerous weapons off our streets is essential to eradicating gun violence and protecting communities from harm. My office will continue taking every measure possible to ensure that New Yorkers are safe and secure in their neighborhoods, and we thank our partners in law enforcement for their invaluable support and partnership in this effort.”

“Today my office joined with the New York Attorney General’s Office and the Clarkstown Police Department to host a voluntary gun buyback program,” said Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh. “The event was a huge success! It is our hope that we were able to get weapons off our streets that could have been a potential threat to our community. It is our belief that the removal of one gun could save a life. Special thanks goes out to Attorney General Letitia James and the Clarkstown Police Department for their collaboration in this effort. This event made Rockland safer today, and I couldn’t be more grateful to those involved.”

“We are pleased to have taken part in such a successful event,” said Clarkstown Police Chief Jeffrey Wanamaker. “Today’s gun buyback was well attended by the community, resulting in removing potentially dangerous weapons from our streets.”

The community buyback resulted in 147 guns being collected, including 57 handguns, 63 rifles and shotguns, four assault rifle, and 23 non-working or antique guns. Since 2013, OAG has hosted gun buyback events throughout New York state and has successfully collected nearly 3,400 firearms.

In exchange for the firearms, OAG also offered monetary compensation, in the form of prepaid gift cards, and Apple iPads when an unloaded gun was received and secured by an officer on-site.

“Our nation’s gun violence epidemic demands that we use every tool at our disposal to keep our communities safe,” said U.S. Representative Mondaire Jones“New York has been a leader in the fight to end gun violence, but there is still more to be done. As we work to protect the health and safety of all New Yorkers, I’m grateful to Attorney General James for organizing this gun buyback event.”

“I thank the Attorney General, Rockland County District Attorney, and the Clarkstown Police Department for providing the community a safe and no-questions-asked method to reduce the number of unwanted guns on our streets,” said State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick“This program ensures that any surplus of guns are accounted for in the safest way possible, and sends the right message to community members that law enforcement stands ready to assist them in proactively making their communities safer.”

My constituents and I are grateful to Attorney General James for her steadfast commitment to ending gun violence across New York state,” said State Senator James Skoufis“I also thank our partners in law enforcement for their continued support of this important work. We must take every meaningful step possible to ensure our communities are safe, including hosting no-questions-asked buybacks like this one, and I am thrilled to see that many of our Rockland residents stepped up to do the right thing today.”

“I’m grateful to the Attorney General, Rockland County District Attorney, and our local police departments and law enforcement agencies for working together to host a very effective gun buyback event,” said State Assemblymember Mike Lawler“Getting illegal, unwanted, or unused guns off our streets reduces gun violence and makes Rockland County a safer place to live.”

Yonkers Insider: ***NEWS RELEASE***: CITY OF YONKERS UNVEILS PUBLIC ART EXHIBIT ALONG YONKERS GREENWAY.

YONKERS, NY – June 30, 2021– Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and community partners Groundwork Hudson Valley  and Community Engagement Through the Arts today gathered to unveil a new public art installation at Smith, O’Hara, Levine Park along the Yonkers Greenway. Designed and installed by Yonkers artist Haifa Bint-Kadi, the public art exhibit features three mosaic poles and two 2-D steel cut outs that represent the Greenway’s history and natural habitat.

The Yonkers Greenway public art exhibit enhances the recently revitalized park that also features a new playground that is transforming the once abandoned section of the Old Putnam Railroad. The Yonkers Greenway is a 2.4 mile walking and biking trail that soon will connect Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx up to the Yonkers downtown train station.

“This beautiful art exhibit will be an integral part of the Greenway’s goal to renew the neighborhood and improve the lives of all of our community residents,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “I want to thank our partner Groundwork Hudson Valley and Community Engagement Through the Arts for this meaningful installation celebrating the culture and fabric of our city.”

"Groundwork Hudson Valley is very proud to partner with the City of Yonkers,” said Brigitte Griswold, Executive Director, Groundwork Hudson Valley. “The installation of Haifa Bint-Kadi's amazing artwork, with the help of our Green Team, not only enhances the space here, it connects the history of this site with the current community. We are looking forward to working with the city and the local community members as the construction begins on the Yonkers Greenway."

The Yonkers Greenway public art exhibit features "All Aboard," a set of two steel sculptures that were rendered from the actual photographs of a Putnam Railroad conductor and a Putnam Railroad locomotive in honor of the site’s history as the Lowerre Rail Station. The installation also includes three mosaic poles each depicting unique themes:

    • The Community Garden Pole depicts the Greenway in all its glory, biking, gardening and neighbors coming together.
    • The Foodway Pole depicts foods from around the world.
    • The Paradise Pole displays cultural patterns and symbols from all the rich cultures that have chosen to call Yonkers home.

“My objective with this exhibit is that all Yonkers residents will see their identities and cultural contributions honored and celebrated in this art every time they visit the Greenway,” said artist Haifa Bint-Kadi.

The Yonkers branch of the Putnam Railroad ran from 1880 to 1943 between the old Polo Grounds in New York City and Getty Square in downtown Yonkers, which was instrumental to the early development of modern day Yonkers.  In the early 1960’s, the Lowerre Station area of the railroad was converted into the Smith, O’Hara, Levine Park in honor of three Yonkers World War II veterans.  However, by the 1980’s the park had fallen into disrepair. The Yonkers Parks Board recently rededicated Smith, O’Hara, Levine Park where the Greenway Playground and Greenway art exhibit now stand.

The Yonkers Greenway public art exhibit was funded through a federal Community Development Block Grant administered by the City’s Department of Planning and Development. The Yonkers Greenway is currently being designed and is expected to be constructed by spring 2022.

Greeenburgh Insider: NYS law needs to be changed - to encourage citizen board members to participate by zoom.

Current law requires in person meetings. However, citizen board members can participate by zoom if they open up their homes to the public while participating. This is ridiculous.

In recent months (since the pandemic) members of Town Boards, City Councils, School Boards and citizen advisory boards have gotten used to meeting by zoom - from the comforts of their home.  The Governor recently issued a directive requiring Boards (including all volunteer boards) to meet in person.  There is a ridiculous requirement in the state law enabling board members who can't participate in person to continue to participate via zoom ONLY IF THEY OPEN UP THEIR HOME TO THE PUBLIC WHILE THEY ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE ZOOM CALL.  The current law discourages participation. It's a step backwards.

The NYS law should be amended to allow Board members to continue to participate in meetings via zoom without opening up their homes to the public to observe their vote.  I am reaching out to the Governor and State Legislators asking that the law be changed.

For unpaid volunteers of a public body who are not personally comfortable in meeting in a small Town Hall conference room at this point in time with the emergence of a new highly contagious variant of the Covid virus,

- If there is a member who has just had surgery and, though with discomfort is heroically participating in Zoom meetings, he/ she now has to further disrupt her recovery and open up his/her house to the public in order to continue participating in Zoom meetings.

- If there is a member who has lost a family member to Covid and out of a sense of duty is participating in Zoom meetings notwithstanding the family and personal stresses, he/she she has to open her house to the public in order to continue participating in Zooms.

- If there are members who have opened their house only to close family members due to the risk of Covid virus contagiousness, they now have to open their houses to unknown strangers in order to continue participating in Zooms. In these times, even without Covid, normal people don’t open their houses to strangers.

Who knows what is going to be the Covid situation in the fall when millions of Americans return from vacations in far-away lands.

The State Legislature and Governor should recognize the advantages of technology. Zoom meetings have increased citizen involvement and participation. Dedicated volunteers and Board members who can't make meetings due to illnesses, business or personal issues should be encouraged to continue to participate.

PAUL FEINER
Greenburgh Town Supervisor

The Committee on Open Government has revised its view and now believes that videoconferencing of Town meetings is permissible. However, if videoconferencing is used, the public notice for the meeting is required to inform the public that videoconferencing will be used, identify the locations for the meeting, and state that the public has the right to attend the meeting at any of the locations at which a member of the public body participates.

Greenburgh Insider: Stop sign approved on Payne in N Elmsford to reduce speeding.

A meeting with civic leaders last Wednesday on Payne resulted in a resolution approved by the Town Board less than a week later authorizing a stop sign.

The Town Board approved the following resolution  on Tuesday night adding a stop sign on Payne & Cabot. Hope this reduces speeding on Payne and increases safety.  Police Chief Chris McNerney, Sgt Nick Reckson and I  met last Wed with  North Elmsford civic leaders and residents on Payne (at Massaro Park)  and was able to act quickly. Appreciate the quick action the police and Town Board took to address this safety concern.
