Yonkers Insider: New York League of Conservation Voters: Environmental News for April 26th.

 


In honor of Earth Day, we unveiled our video of interviews with candidates for NYC Mayor, where we asked them about their plans for fighting climate change, improving water quality, investing in our parks, composting, and other issues. We will provide a more detailed summary later but you can watch the video here. Here’s what we’re reading this week:

NYLCV Joins Statewide Lobby Day in Honor of Earth Day

NYLCV joined two dozen environmental groups from across New York to lobby more than 60 members of the state legislature on 10 bills to advance environmental justice, protect drinking water, ban harmful chemicals, support sustainable waste management, and protect natural habitats. Several of the bills included are NYLCV priorities and are likely to appear on our legislative scorecard later this year.

Mayor de Blasio Makes Major Announcement on Two NYLCV Priorities: Organic Waste and School Buses

On Earth Day, Mayor de Blasio announced that the city's food scrap collection program would restart and a transition to electric school buses citywide, among other initiatives. We have long been advocating for both of these policies, including as founding members of the NYC Clean School Bus Coalition.

Long Island Railroad is studying the feasibility of building the first battery-operated commuter trains in North America, which would reduce diesel emissions, decrease costs, and make the rail service more reliable and efficient. Clean transportation and improvements to mass transit is one of NYLCV's priorities. (Newsday)

President Biden is working to jumpstart the offshore wind industry with the goal of powering 10 million homes by 2030. Expanding offshore wind would help combat climate change and create good-paying, green jobs. (CBS)

Governor Cuomo also made several Earth Week announcements including 20 renewable energy projects that are under construction across the state. Together, these projects will power more than 320,000 homes and offset one million metric tons of carbon emissions a year. (Power Technology)
