Dear Friends and Neighbors,
On May 29th, 2020 all seventeen members of the Westchester County Board of Legislators wrote to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and members of the Minneapolis City Council, to condemn the killing of George Floyd and to call for swift, fair and total justice by state and local authorities in Minnesota.
In the months that followed, we didn't just wait to see what would happen --- we took action.
Members of the Board participated in the County's Police Reform and Reimagining Task Force, which did extensive outreach to gather information from relevant sources, issued a report in March 2021. The report establishes a blueprint for police reform intended to promote more equitable policing in Westchester. In a unanimous vote on March 22nd, after weeks of review by the Board's Public Safety Committee, the Board adopted the report.
And now, today, April 21, 2021, after closely following the trial of Derek Chauvin, we are so gratified that our justice system worked in the way it was intended -- to protect the innocent and incarcerate the perpetrator regardless of race or position. We share the sense of relief with people all across America that justice was done swiftly and unequivocally, and that we have a starting place for justice moving forward. We have witnessed a pivotal moment in the history of our country. We must keep this in our hearts and minds as we move forward with a renewed commitment to justice for all Americans, and to the principle that Black Lives Matter.
Sincerely,
