Yonkers Insider: Statement from Yonkers City Council Majority Leader Corazon Pineda Issac 2nd District.

 

I addressed this issue earlier this week, but something this important deserves to be at the forefront of conversation, and not quickly dismissed. There has been a lot of depressing news regarding Asian/Pacific Islander hate crimes on what now appears to be a daily basis. It is no secret that Asian Americans have suffered from the racist sentiments of this country, whether it be the Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese Internment during World War II or the latest hate and violent crimes that have been taking place across the country. Like the others, the recent incident in Atlanta was completely abhorrent, depressing and disgraceful. I offer my sincerest condolences to everyone affected directly and indirectly by these acts of racism. We, here in New York, have also witnessed a statistically significant uptick in Asian hate crimes. Only through acceptance and community can we improve these conditions and move beyond the racist shackles that have hindered us for far too long in this country.
