Throughout February, we held a series of environmental candidate schools for those running for elected office in New York City. The topics covered included waste management, building emissions, infrastructure, transportation, public health, parks, and resiliency. Many thanks to our partner organizations who generously donated their time to school the scores of first-time candidates running for local office.

Expert Insight: Invasive Knotweed

Along with our partners, we recently held a webinar on knotweed in the Upper Delaware River Watershed. Knotweed is present everywhere along the Upper Delaware River and its tributaries. Left unmanaged, it continues to spread along the river and everywhere it can find suitable conditions all the while crowding out native riparian vegetation leading to habitat loss, soil erosion, and bank destabilization.

The NYC 25x25 coalition, led by Transportation Alternatives and of which we are part, launched and is urging candidates for City office to pledge to transform 25% of street space currently devoted to cars as public space. Prioritizing the streetscape for families encourages New Yorkers to take mass transit and use micromobility options like bikes and scooters, and improves air quality. (Streetsblog)

In an NYLCV authored op-ed, our president Julie Tighe calls for passing an Environmental Bond Act which would invest in environmental programs that protect clean water, address climate change, create jobs, upgrade parks, improve resiliency, and invest in environmental justice communities. The NYS Office of Renewable Energy Siting finalized its new regulatory framework to accelerate renewable energy growth. Encouraging the growth of renewable energy has been one of our top priorities because under the current regulations, it takes 5-10 years for projects to begin construction. (Solar Power World)
