Dear Neighbors and Friends, Many of us have spent a lot more time than usual in our homes this past year, and one result is a massive trend toward decluttering. Now the question remains -- what on earth can we do with all that STUFF we no longer want or need? There are a number of local resources and organizations to assist in this effort. One such entity is the Household Material Recovery Facility at Grasslands Campus, 15 Woods Road in Valhalla. Make an appointment to drop off your hard-to-get-rid-of household waste (like cell phones, propane tanks, used computers but NOT PAINT): https://environment. For Bedford residents, the Mobile Shredder has a number of dates scheduled for 2021: https://bedfordny.gov/ North Salem: Thursday, April 8, 9-11, Corner of 116 and June Rd. Lewisboro: Friday, April 16, 9-12 at the Town Park. Residents are limited to 4 boxes, and people must remain in their cars while the boxes are unloaded. For more information, call the Lewisboro Town Clerk at 914-763-3511. Pound Ridge: Saturday, April 24, 10-1 at the Town Park. For more information, call the Pound Ridge Town Clerk at 914-764-5549. Mt. Kisco is anticipating a visit from the shredder in May, so be sure to check the town website in April for more specific information. Please be aware that these shredder events are for town residents only. When it comes to finding new homes for books, Bedford Residents can drop off at one of the book bins located at the Bedford Recycling Center at 343 Railroad Ave in Bedford Hills. Other District 2 residents can try BIG BROTHERS & BIG SISTERS OF WESTCHESTER ( 877-399-2570 or www.bbbs.org) or the Goodwill Donation Center at 380 Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford. If you are looking to donate used clothing in good condition, the Community Center of Northern Westchester is currently accepting spring clothing only during their business hours: Tue, Wed and Fri 10-4; Thurs 12-6; and Sat 10-1. 84 Bedford Road in Katonah. To donate household goods, call the Katonah Thrift Shop at 914-232-3010 or email KATONAHSHOP@Yahoo.com to schedule your donation. The Thrift Shop accepts donations of clean, lightly used items of clothing, jewelry, home décor, kitchen ware and small pieces of furniture. If there is another establishment that accepts donations please let us know, as we were unable to find another one in District 2. In Pound Ridge, the Conservation Board is working in conjunction with resident Riley Hester to promote “Recycle Right with Riley,” a recycling collection system offering a number of different locations in the town that accept materials for recycling – everything from eyeglasses to retired American flags to mascara wands. Visit www.recyclingrightwithriley. The Bedford Take it Or Leave it Shed (aka TIOLI) is another great place for Bedford residents to drop off items like tools, houseware, small appliances, games, toys, sports equipment and office supplies (residents of other towns may pick up items but cannot drop off). Located in the Bedford Hills Train Station, the shed (currently scheduled to reopen in May) will be open every Saturday between 10:00am and 1 pm. For more information, go to https://bedford2030.org/tools/ Please feel free to email me directly if you know of additional locations and resources for donating goods. May the coming Spring bring us all health, happiness, and very clean closets! Very truly yours, |
