Here’s what we’re reading this week:

What a Biden Administration Can Do for New York's Environment: We expect 2021 to be a year in which the federal government takes decisive action to help New York State achieve its nation-leading climate goals.

News Roundup:

Senator Chuck Schumer said that President-elect Biden could help make $11.6 billion available for rail lines under the Hudson River including the Gateway Tunnel that has been delayed by the Trump Administration. Getting the tunnel built is one of NYLCV’s priorities because more efficient mass transit helps reduce air pollution. (Daily News)

Members of Congress plan to push president-elect Biden to put two prevalent forms of PFAS chemicals – PFOA and PFOS – on the list of hazardous substances covered under the federal Superfund law. Discovery of PFOA in the drinking water in Hoosick Falls several years ago prompted a state investigation and an ongoing overhaul of its water system. Petersburgh, Cairo and Newburgh are also grappling with the discovery of PFAS chemicals in their groundwater. (Albany Times Union)

A study of Massachusetts’ Vineyard Wind Project is set to be released next month, paving the way for federal approval of the first major U.S. offshore wind project. (Reuters

The new $10 million New York Climate Progress Program recently announced by Governor Cuomo will provide investments to technology start-ups that offer low-carbon goods and services. The program will encourage the growth of the clean energy sector by funding early-stage startup firms focused on climate technologies. (Inform NY)

The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program for the Scenic Woods-Bicentennial Park in Grand Island, located northwest of Buffalo, is complete. The project, supported by the state’s Environmental Protection Fund, will enhance the town’s waterfront and improve greenspace. (WNY papers)

The newly-replaced Salt Point Turnpike Bridge in Dutchess County will improve water flow and protect the ecology of Wappinger Creek, the longest creek in the largest watershed in Dutchess County. (STL News)

The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) launched its second Bus Rapid Transit line making connections and service quicker and easier than ever before. The service which is known as the “Blue Line” will connect communities along the Hudson River with limited stop service that looks and feels like rail. It is the second leg of CDTA’s three-line BRT network. (The Saratogian)

Sincerely,

New York League of Conservation Voters
