Dear Friends and Neighbors,
New York State's new seat belt law goes into effect November 1.
Under the new law, all motor vehicle passengers 16 and older must be restrained by a seat belt, whether they are in the front seat or the back seat. The prior law only required seat belts for front-seat passengers.
I'm proud to have joined all my colleagues on the Board of Legislators in a letter last July urging Governor Cuomo to sign the measure, which he did in August.
A statewide seat belt observational survey conducted in June 2018 showed that seat belt use rate was at a historical high of 93%. Despite these gains in usage, roughly 33% of the front-seat occupants killed on New York State roadways are unrestrained. When unbelted back seat occupants killed are included, the total unrestrained killed percentage rises to approximately 37%.
Increasing seat belt use is the most effective way to reduce crash-related injuries and fatalities.
So please, buckle up.
Sincerely,
