LMC Media celebrates Community Media Day in Larchmont-Mamaroneck.
For the fifth year in a row, LMC Media will observe Community Media Day on October 20, an annual celebration that brings awareness to the importance of free speech and accessible media for all individuals to have their voices heard.
“Even though it’s been a hard year for us all, there’s plenty to celebrate,” according to Executive Director Matt Sullivan, who cites his organization’s dedication to serving local residents and organizations, especially since COVID-19 upturned the world.
Sullivan points to the recent success of “Media Matters,” the organization’s virtual gala on October 15 that honored retiring Rep. Nita Lowey and raised almost $50,000 to make up for budget cuts and continue the work of the non-profit.
Community Media Day will also debut the station’s redesigned website. A team effort by Sullivan, station programmer Stephen Aluisa, and Board member Louis Simons, the website promises a fresh look with more information, easier navigation, and expanded services. “We are thrilled to launch this new site that sheds a spotlight on the local, professional services offered by LMC Media,” said Sullivan. “I feel this is an excellent representation of the type of production value LMC Media provides to our Sound Shore Community.”
LMC Media is also celebrating Steven Bisaillon as their 2020 Volunteer of the Year. Accepting the award, which is named in honor of the late Joseph P. Fraioli, the recent Iona College graduate acknowledged the varied and valuable experience along with the fun he’s had at the media center.
Another cause for celebration, the station’s new mobile production van made an appearance in “Media Matters.” Board of Directors’ President Jeff Meighan extolled its usefulness covering sports, parades, and local events.
Recently, the Board joined Sullivan and Assistant Director Dena Schumacher in the studio as she unveiled the now completed jigsaw mural designed by Jamie Lynn Weisenger of M.A.D.E. Art Studio in Mamaroneck. Since consolidating operations on the top floor of the Mamaroneck Town Center in 2018, fifty people and organizations have claimed a piece and raised $10,000 for new digital field equipment and other services.
This year Community Media Day occurs in the midst of Free Speech Week in the U.S..
Rep. Lowey spoke at the gala about the vital role of community media:
“The importance of work like yours cannot be overstated. Local media centers provide quality programming that strengthens the community. Accessible and reliable information can be difficult to come by, and it is imperative that we protect groups like LMC Media who share current and accurate information about local government, schools, and other organizations.
“That is why I was so pleased to work with Congressman Engel to tell the FCC not to mess with community TV. In light of much disinformation, your role is more important than ever before.
“Community media enriches the lives of those who tune in for news, entertainment, and educational programming. You keep the public informed on important issues and supply an outlet for the most creative of your neighbors.
“Though I am retiring, I will continue to support your mission and champion local media. It’s a privilege to know such motivated people who will support our community by keeping them informed, updated, engaged and involved.”
LMC Media plans to re-play the “Media Matters” hour-long gala on October 20 on its local cable TV channels, Optimum 75 and FiOS 36. It’s available now on their website, lmcmedia.org, and YouTube channel.
