Yonkers Insider: New York League of Conservation Voters.

Here’s what we’re reading this week:

“The Earth Has A Deadline” Climate Clock warns us just how much time we have left: Climate activists recently showed us just exactly how soon we can expect impacts of climate change through their installation of the Climate Clock in Union Square - a clock broadcasting the exact amount of time we have to curb greenhouse gas emissions before we face a climate catastrophe.

NYC Needs Its E-Scooter Pilot ProgramE-scooters have the potential to further decrease traffic congestion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide commuters with a socially distanced transportation option. It is a critical time to be pragmatic and execute this pilot as New York City continues to adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Green Tips: Fall Yard Stewardship: Autumn brings upkeeping tasks for outdoor spaces. With falling leaves and dropping temperatures, we want to make sure that you’re equipped with sustainable yard care tips.

News Roundup:

All of us at NYLCV are mourning the tremendous loss of Cecil Corbin-Mark, Deputy Director and Director of Policy Initiatives at WE ACT for Environmental Justice and someone we have worked closely with over many years. Our thoughts are with the Corbin-Mark family and the WE ACT family. Cecil was a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day and a leader for Environmental Justice for our City, our State and our Country. The loss of his voice in the environmental movement leaves a void we will all feel.  We celebrate his life, work, and everything we learned from him.

Along with our partners Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Students for Climate Action, and Renewable Energy Long Island, we held an environmental candidate forum for Congressional Districts 1 and 2. We will provide a full recap next week. In the meantime, read more in the Times Review or watch the full video on YouTube.

The NYS Department of Public Service approved an expanded Clean Energy Standard to meet the state’s goal of 70% renewable energy by 2030. The standard includes 25,000 megawatts of procurements for renewable energy and incentives for projects that feed directly into New York City. (Utility Dive) Read our statement of support here.

NYLCV attended the NYC Department of Transportation’s ribbon cutting for its newly resurrected protected bike lane on Sixth Ave, which was first introduced under the Koch Administration and removed thereafter. Improving bike lane infrastructure is one of our top priorities because we need more clean and safe alternatives to cars. (amNY)

The Maid of the Mist Niagara Falls iconic boat tour launched two new electric, zero-emission vessels. They will not make any engine noise, adding to the serenity of the passengers' experience while lowering the carbon footprint of the tour. (Clean Technica)

The owners of the site where the Bethlehem Steel Plant in Lackawanna once stood were ordered to clean up the area. The $35 million environmental remediation project will give residents access to the nearby waterfront. (WGRZ)

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) recently signed an agreement with the Peak Coalition, a group of five environmental justice and clean energy groups, to reduce emissions at NYPA's six power plants, which are predominantly located in environmental justice communities. (Green Tech Media)

Sincerely,

New York League of Conservation Voters
