On Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 10am, join me for the 20th Anniversary of the Brides March at Lincoln Park (corner of South Broadway and McLean Avenue), a memorial walk for Gladys Ricart and all victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a prominent issue that is seen throughout the nation. At the start of the pandemic, domestic violence cases became even more prevalent. With establishments and facilities closed down completely, people were forced to be in lockdown with their abusers!
The Brides March has been held annually to honor the memory of Gladys Ricart, who was shot dead on her wedding day by her abusive and jealous ex-boyfriend as she was dressed in her wedding dress and about to marry her fiancĂ©. Gladys Ricart was buried in her wedding dress. Every year, there are “Brides Marches” against domestic violence throughout the country in honor of her memory. This is our first one in Yonkers.
In support and honor of this march, we ask women to wear a white dress or dress in ALL white as it has become a profound symbol of the March.
The Brides’ March calls on men who denounce domestic violence to join forces in publicly denouncing domestic violence and raising awareness of this antisocial criminal behavior. We ask men to dress in ALL black to represent mourning for the many who have lost their lives to domestic violence.
Because domestic violence is a situation no one should ever fall victim to, having resources and support systems in place are crucial to allow victims a way out. Here is a list of resources that can used to seek help for men, women, teens and children. There are resources for every member of the community, including legal services. We all deserve to be safe. Together we can bring domestic violence to an end.
Hope to see you at the Yonkers Brides March on September 26th.
