NEWS: Leading Bronx Democratic Leaders Endorse Eliot Engel for Congress.
BRONX - Praising his long record of service to the community and record of delivering Federal funds to the Bronx, a group of widely respected lifelong progressive Bronx Democrats has endorsed Congressman Eliot Engel for reelection.
The group is led by former Assemblywoman and Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene, a beloved figure in Bronx politics and one of the longest serving Democrats in the borough’s political history.
Joining her are Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson, Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner, and the Jerome Alexander Greene Democratic Club, which voted unanimously to endorse Congressman Engel.
“Eliot and I have worked together for many years to help our community in the Bronx,” said former Assemblywoman Greene. “Any time I picked up the phone for the Bronx, Eliot answered. He’s rock solid, a real Democrat, and he’s fighting against the worst of Trump’s abuses.”
“First of all Aurelia Greene is a legend in the Bronx, one of the great Democrats of my lifetime and it’s an incredible honor to receive her endorsement,” said Congressman Engel. “She has always stood strong for the community and is rightly a beloved figure to all of us.”
“We know that Congressman Engel can deliver for the Bronx because he’s proven it time and again,” said Councilwoman Gibson. “We simply cannot afford to lose Eliot’s experience and leadership in Washington. The result would be catastrophic.”
“Eliot delivers, he always shows up and it’s as simple as that,” said Assemblywoman Joyner. “He is a progressive partner in government who has proven he cares about the community through his years of service. We certainly need his leadership now.”
“Vanessa Gibson and Latoya Joyner are two of the brightest lights in all of New York politics, and it’s such an honor for me to have their endorsement,” said Congressman Engel. “Their progressive leadership for the Bronx and all New Yorkers stands as a testament to their commitment to the community.”
“We know that Eliot shows up for us because there is a long history of him doing just that,” said Venancio “Benny” Catala, president of the Jerome Alexander Greene Democratic Club, whose roots in the Bronx community stretch back to 1979. “Eliot is also a true Democrat who believes in progressive Democratic values. We need him in Washington, working for the Bronx.”
Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) is seeking re-election in the 16th District of New York, including the north Bronx and southern Westchester. The son of an ironworker and a homemaker, born in the Bronx and raised in public housing, Rep. Engel is a major progressive Democratic leader who chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee and has fought for the rights of women, organized labor, immigrants, our minority communities, and LGBTQ Americans for three decades.
