NEW YORK - House Democratic Caucus Chairman Congressman Hakeem Jeffries of New York has endorsed Congressman Eliot Engel for re-election, citing his longtime commitment to civil rights and justice reform.
“Congressman Eliot Engel is not a new friend. He's a true friend,” said Chairman Jeffries. “Eliot Engel has been there for our community decade after decade, and always when we have needed him the most. Eliot was there when four police officers gunned down Amadou Diallo in a hail of 41 shots. He was there for the community when Ramarley Graham was killed unjustifiably by a police officer in his own home. Congressman Engel was there for us in the fight to pass historic criminal justice reform in Congress in 2018. And he is there for us today as we work to pass the Justice in Policing Act and address racial discrimination in America.”
Chairman Jeffries also noted that Congressman Engel served as one of the six chairmen leading the probe that led to the impeachment of President Trump, bringing vital facts to the public as Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“Let’s send Eliot Engel back to Congress so he can continue his life's work For The People,” said Chairman Jeffries.
“I am deeply grateful for Chairman Jeffries’ friendship and for his endorsement, especially now during these challenging times in our country,” said Congressman Engel. “Hakeem’s strength and progressive values - his belief in social justice and willingness to stand up and speak so powerfully when it’s time to be counted - help to lead the way for all of us. I’m honored to serve in leadership with my fellow New Yorker.”
Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) is seeking re-election in the 16th District of New York, including the north Bronx and southern Westchester. The son of an ironworker and a homemaker, born in the Bronx and raised in public housing, Rep. Engel is a major progressive Democratic leader who chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee and has fought for the rights of women, organized labor, immigrants, our minority communities, and LGBTQ Americans for three decades.
