Abinanti Applauds Executive Order For
In-Person Summer Special Ed.
In-Person Summer Special Ed.
I applaud Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Executive Order issued earlier today which permits “in-person” special education services and instruction for the summer term.
I am pleased that the Governor heard the plea that I and many others have been making for the last few months to address the needs of those with special needs.
The summer session is crucial to beginning compensatory education services. The last several weeks have shown that online learning cannot fulfill the needs of so many of our students with disabilities. Many have regressed, losing the gains that they had made through special education services and instruction.
Next, we need to provide compensatory education for those who “aged out” of our public education system because they reached the age of 21 during the pandemic school closure. We must provide these young adults with the final component of their transition from school to adult life.
Finally, we must provide families access to their loved ones with special needs in group homes and residential schools to whom they have been denied access during the last three months. In-person visitation by families is crucial to the well-being of those with special needs, and provides the oversight necessary to ensure that their loved ones are being properly cared for in the homes and residential schools.
