NEWS 12: Yonkers city employee allowed to return to job after DWI charge

The City of Yonkers is apparently allowing an employee to return to work after he was charged with drinking and driving and involved in a crash.

It's been two months since Akeem Jamal, the newly appointed Yonkers deputy communications director, was allegedly driving while intoxicated. Despite that, the city of Yonkers says it is taking him back.

The incident occurred on Sept. 15, just four months into his new role when authorities say he was caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration over .11%.

According to the Yonkers Police Department, Akeem Jamal allegedly drove against traffic on Central Avenue in Yonkers for over a mile before he crashed head-on into another vehicle....

OPINION: Do you believe in second chances? I do. Second chances deliver the opportunity to correct a wrong and choose a better path - By Brian Harrod (Yonkers Newswire Editor)

There are some who say that #AkeemJamal got the job, because of his very wealthy father who is involved with the Yonkers Public Schools - and there may be some truth in that.

We all know that most 22 year olds in professional situations are interns fetching coffee for the boss, but I do not believe this to be the case for Akeem Jamal.

My personal experience was that Akeem Jamal at City Hall, left me with the impression that he was doing an exceptional job in Mayor Mike Spano's press office.

I have had many professional press officials in Connecticut and many Westchester County communities reach out to the RoundupNewswires.com hyper local news pages, but the only communications official in #Yonkers that reached out and invited the Yonkers Newswire down to his office was Akeem Jamal.

In fact he followed up with me on three separate occasions to touch based and establish the relationship with his office, which no other Yonkers organization had done.

I never made it down to The City of Yonkers press office, but on the phone when I called Akeem Jamal was exceptionally professional and helpful.

In my opinion other media contacts in the Yonkers Public Schools, the Yonkers Police Department, Yonkers Public Library and some other agencies in The City of Yonkers could learn a lot from Akeem Jamal.

Yes, he is going to have to face the music on these DUI charges and is hopefully seek medical care for his abuse of alcohol, but I think in the end that Akeem Jamal will turn this worse moment of his life into a positive.

I am a person who believes in second chances and America is a place where comebacks are possible.

We see in this scripture that the God of Abraham is a God of second chances.

When we mess up, we can hit the reset button and fix the harm we have caused as we once again move forward

I could be wrong, but I think that Akeem Jamal will eventually pay his debt to society and be successful here in Yonkers.

Personally, I wish him well, on his journey to set things right.
