Statement and Events from Yonkers City Council President, Mike Khader.

Message From Mike

Dear Neighbor,

With last weekend’s mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, our country finds itself in an all too familiar position. We grieve… we express outrage…we demand action..but nothing changes, so we go on with our daily lives. The epidemic of gun violence in our country isn’t a problem that can be solved by simply passing a law or funding mental health programs – it’s a problem that starts in our communities – and ultimately, will be fixed there, too.

This issue hits close to home given the recent gun violence here in Yonkers over the past few months. The Yonkers Police Department does a tremendous job in keeping us safe, but as I’ve said before, they can’t do it alone, they need our help. That is why its essential for residents to engage and to share any concerns with local law enforcement.

That’s why initiatives like National Night Out are so important. This week, police met with hundreds of community members in order to build and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and neighborhood residents. It’s been shown that neighborhoods where residents have good relations with the police are measurably safer because they are partners in keeping their community safe.

I ask that everyone does their part to try and do a little more in their communities. Attending a local precinct meeting, volunteering at a neighborhood cleanup, or even just thanking a police officer can make all the difference. Because positive change begins right here in our community and it begins with the smallest of steps. I have included precinct meeting information and encourage everyone to attend.

As always, feel free to reach out to my office with any suggestions or concerns about how we can help to improve the quality of life of those who call Yonkers home. My office can be reached at 914-377-6060 or by sending us an email at councilpresident@yonkersny.gov

Best,
Mike
