Dear Neighbor,
Today, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed my legislation to ban undetectable guns - guns that cannot be detected by an x-ray machine or metal detector commonly used at security checkpoints at airports and courthouses.
Undetectable guns have no legitimate purpose. This is another common sense step by the Legislature and Governor to deter gun violence and make New York safer for everyone.
The Governor also signed legislation to ensure that guns are properly stored. New York State follows Westchester County's safe storage law that I passed as a county legislator in 2000 – a reasonable law that is necessary to keep guns out of hands of children.
During this 2019 Session the Legislature passed several bills designed to prevent gun violence which the Governor has signed, in addition to the “safe storage” and the “undetectable guns” bills.
The new laws include:
• “Red Flag” law which permits judges to take guns away from those found to be a risk to themselves and others.
• “Bump Stock” law which prohibits possession of a device that allows a semi -automatic rifle to function as an automatic weapon.
• “30 day” law which extends the present short waiting period from 3 days to 30 days for people who want to buy a gun and who are not immediately approved from the federal background check.
