Dear Neighbor,

I hope you and your loved ones had relaxing and festive spring vacation and religious celebrations. This was an eventful week in our District. While the Assembly remains in recess, I had the opportunity to host my first Town Hall meeting at one of our local libraries. It was my pleasure to address the concerns of my constituents on a multitude of issues and provide an overview of the changes in legislation and funding in this year's budget. I'd like to thank the other elected officials who took the time to join us and address constituent concerns as well, namely Westchester County Executive George Latimer, Senator Shelley Mayer, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, and City Council President Mike Khader. It was also my pleasure to recognize the Yonkers Public Library as our April 2019 Agency of the Month for their unmatched contributions to our community. Whether it be through their after-school resources for our schoolchildren or their ESL and continuing education programs for adults, they're an indelible institution and we are thankful for their service.

Today is Arbor Day. Arbor Day was established in 1972 by President Richard Nixon who recognized the invaluable benefits associated with planting trees and having greenspace in our communities. I encourage all residents to take the time this weekend to partake in events such as the Yonkers Old Croton Aqueduct Trail Clean-Up in Yonkers. This event is a great way to get involved in community beautification and learn more about the importance of protecting our ecological beauty.

Finally, I'd like to touch upon a tragic incident which took place in our district late last evening. Our community stands in mourning as a result of the senseless death of an 18-year-old female victim of a shooting which took place at the intersection of Morningside and Lake Avenue. The victim was a student at Lincoln High School and was known by her neighbors to be a hardworking young woman with a vibrant future. Any single loss of life to gun violence is one loss too many, and it's why the Assembly has taken on the role of passing strict gun control laws which will prevent incidents like these from happening in the future. Tonight, we will all hug our loved ones a little tighter and be reminded of how delicate and fragile life can be. If you have any information about the shooting, please contact the Yonkers Police Department at 914-377-7724.

Best,

Assemblyman Nader Sayegh
Week in Review
This week was our first Town Hall! Amongst the issues discussed were legislation which has been passed by the Assembly thus far, legislation I've introduced, and some other controversial issues which are still being discussed. These issues include the legalization of recreational marijuana, medical aid in dying, vaccinations, drivers licenses for the undocumented, and much more!

This week, I had the pleasure of attending some of the various Arbor Day events going on across the City of Yonkers. Our district is renowned for its beautiful ecological beauty, and I'm proud to support legislation in the Assembly which will preserve it for generations to come.

Thursday night, I had the pleasure of attending the Yonkers Council of PTAs and PTSAs dinner. It was great to recognize the Council for their contributions as well as Sophia Wu, for her continued advocacy of our students in the best interest of our community. Thank you!

Also on Thursday, my staff was proud to join Mayor Mike Spano, Councilmembers Sabatino, Breen, and Merante, as well as Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Edwin Quezada in recognizing the Patricia A. Dichario School as Yonkers School of the Month. This school is a true beacon of leadership, donating over 4000 pounds of food to Feeding Westchester and contributing $6000 to the American Heart Association. Great work!
