Yonkers Insider: Press Release: Yonkers Term Limit Court Appearance.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Yonkers Residents Sue City Over Term Limits Violation.

A group of Yonkers residents will hold a rally at New York Supreme Court in Brooklyn, New York, on June 23rd at 9 am. They invite all concerned citizens who believe in the importance of upholding term limits and protecting the principles of democracy to join them in their fight.

Yonkers, NY - A non- partisan group of residents from the city of Yonkers have come together to sue the city on the basis that the extension of term limits violates both the Yonkers city charter as well as existing state government statues

The group argues that a mandatory voter referendum should have been held prior to any changes to term limits for Yonkers elected Officials.

Instead the Mayor Mike Spano and the Yonkers City Council circumvented the laws of the state and the spirit of our democracy to grant themselves the ability to stay in office up to sixteen years.

Attorney Michael Sussman, famous for winning the landmark federal  desegregation case in Yonkers, serves as legal counsel for the 12 individuals who filed the lawsuit.

Term limits are essential component of a healthy democracy and critical tool in the fight to demand accountability.

The lawsuit is expected to be closely watched by residents of Yonkers and other municipalities across the state.

It represents a significant moment in the fight to protect the rights of citizens and deter elected officials from abusing their power and authority.
