Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I'm happy to report that Monday night my colleagues on the Board of Legislators joined me in unanimously approving more than $140,000 in funding for several of the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau's popular and important youth development programs.
These include the long running Safe Haven After School Program -- a drop-in program offering academic and social support and mentorship during the school year -- as well as the Safe Haven Summer Camp for youngsters ages 6-12 and the Saturday STEAM program.
The money also pays for the important Step Up! program, which addresses the needs of our most at-risk African American and Hispanic male youth, ages 13 to 19 through mentoring, youth leadership, job readiness training, and public speaking skills.
These programs have always been vitally important in supporting young people in Mount Vernon. Especially now, as we cope with the social, economic and emotional impact of the pandemic, especially on children, I'm gratified that the County and City are able to continue to work together to provide these, and other, programs, that truly can be life changing for young people.
For more information about how to take advantage of these and other programs, I urge you reach out to the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau. You can visit the Bureau's website at https://youth.cmvny.com/ or call the Bureau at 914-665-2344.
Sincerely,
